Cryptorchidism

Overview

Cryptorchidism is the failure of a testicle to descend into the scrotum, including incomplete descent and ectopic testis. It is the most common congenital defect of the male genitalia; about 80% of undescended testes descend within the first year of life.

Symptoms

• Empty scrotum
• Absent testicle on one side
• Groin lump
• Underdeveloped scrotum
• Non-palpable testicle

Treatment

Orchiopexy is usually performed before 18 months of age to reduce the risk of infertility and malignancy.

Dietary advice

Ensure balanced nutrition during childhood, eating plenty of protein- and vitamin-rich foods.
