Infantile Eczema

Overview

Infantile eczema is a common allergic skin inflammation in infants and toddlers, related to an inherited allergic predisposition, food or environmental allergens, and an immature skin barrier. It commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, and scalp, presenting with erythema, papules, exudation, and itching, and often gradually improves after age 1 to 2.

Symptoms

• Facial erythema
• Papules
• Exudation
• Scaling
• Itching

Treatment

Focus on moisturizing and avoiding irritants, use topical medications as directed, and identify and avoid allergens.

Dietary advice

For breastfed infants, the mother should watch her diet; introduce solid foods gradually and observe for allergic reactions.
