Roseola Infantum

Overview

Roseola infantum is a common illness in children aged 6 months to 3 years, caused by human herpesvirus 6. Its most characteristic feature is that a rose-colored fine maculopapular rash appears just as the fever subsides, near the end of the illness. During the high fever the cheeks may be flushed, but appetite and activity remain fairly good, and there may be mild upper respiratory symptoms such as a slight cough.

Symptoms

• Sudden high fever
• Rash appears as fever subsides
• Red maculopapular rash
• Fairly good spirits
• Mild diarrhea

Treatment

Treatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive, focusing on fever reduction and hydration; the rash usually resolves on its own.

Dietary advice

Drink plenty of water during the fever, eat bland, easily digestible liquid or semi-liquid foods, and ensure adequate rest.
