Organophosphate Pesticide Poisoning

Overview

Organophosphate pesticide poisoning is caused by exposure to organophosphate insecticides, which inhibit cholinesterase activity, leading to accumulation of acetylcholine and cholinergic overstimulation. It presents with pinpoint pupils, excessive sweating and salivation, and can rapidly become life-threatening.

Symptoms

• Constricted pupils
• Excessive sweating and salivation
• Nausea and vomiting
• Muscle tremors
• Difficulty breathing

Treatment

Rapidly remove the toxin by gastric lavage, apply adequate atropine and cholinesterase reactivators as early as possible, and maintain respiratory and circulatory function.

Dietary advice

After the condition stabilizes, start with a light liquid diet and transition gradually, avoiding greasy foods and those rich in choline.
