Rectal Polyp

Overview

A colorectal polyp is a growth of tissue projecting from the mucosal surface of the colon or rectum. If left untreated, some polyps may progress to colorectal cancer. Incidence increases with age and is higher in men.

Symptoms

• Bloody stool
• Mucous stool
• Change in bowel habits
• Protruding mass

Treatment

Most are treated by endoscopic removal; specimens are sent for pathology, with regular follow-up colonoscopy afterward.

Dietary advice

Eat plenty of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, reduce high-fat red meat, and keep stools soft.
