Pericoronitis

Overview

Pericoronitis is inflammation of the soft tissue surrounding the crown of a partially erupted or impacted third molar (wisdom tooth). It is common in young adults and presents with gum swelling and pain and limited mouth opening, and in severe cases may be accompanied by fever and local abscess.

Symptoms

• Gum swelling and pain
• Limited mouth opening
• Pain when chewing
• Fever
• Local redness and swelling

Treatment

In the acute phase, treatment focuses on local irrigation, medication, and anti-infective therapy. After inflammation is controlled, extraction may be considered for impacted wisdom teeth with recurrent episodes.

Dietary advice

Drink plenty of warm water, eat liquid or soft foods, and avoid spicy, hard, and very hot foods.
