Heat Illness (Heatstroke)
EmergencyOverview
Heat illness is an acute condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures, leading to disturbances in heat balance and/or water-salt metabolism, mainly manifesting as central nervous system and/or cardiovascular disorders. Broadly, it includes heat exhaustion warning signs, mild heat illness, and severe heat illness, the latter further divided into heat stroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion.
Symptoms
- High fever
- Dizziness
- Profuse sweating
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Confusion
Treatment
Immediately remove the person from the hot environment, move them to a cool place to cool down, and replenish water and electrolytes. Severe heat illness requires rapid medical care with rapid cooling and supportive symptomatic treatment.
Dietary advice
Promptly replenish water and electrolyte-containing fluids, eat a light, easily digestible diet, and consume more water-rich vegetables and fruits.
