Overview

Plantar fasciitis is a disorder of the connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot, at the point where the fascia attaches to the heel bone. It causes heel or sole pain that is worst with the first steps in the morning or after rest, and is associated with overuse, obesity, and tight calf muscles.

Symptoms

  • Heel pain
  • Pain with first steps in the morning
  • Worse with prolonged standing
  • Local tenderness

Treatment

Treatment is mainly rest, foot stretching, physical therapy, and arch-support insoles, with local injection when necessary.

Dietary advice

Balanced diet and weight control to reduce pressure on the sole of the foot.
