Sciatica

Overview

Sciatica is pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the largest and longest single nerve in the body, which runs from the lower back down the back of the leg to the foot. It commonly presents with radiating pain from the lower back into the leg.

Symptoms

• Radiating low back and leg pain
• Lower limb numbness
• Limited movement
• Decreased muscle strength

Treatment

Managed mainly with rest and NSAID pain relief, combined with physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises. When the cause is clear and conservative treatment fails, surgery targeting the underlying condition may be considered.

Dietary advice

Maintain a balanced diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D, and control weight to reduce the load on the lumbar spine.
