Staring at Screens All Day, Your Eyes Are "Crying for Help": Eye Care That Actually Works

Phones, computers and tablets take turns, and our eyes bear unprecedented strain. Dry, sore, tired eyes, or even blurry vision, are all reminders that it's time to rest. Eye care doesn't need fancy gear; the key is building good habits.
lightbulbKey takeaways
- ✓Screens reduce blinking and strain the ciliary muscle, causing dry eye and fatigue
- ✓Remember the "20-20-20" rule to relax the eyes at intervals
- ✓Use sensible lighting, blink more, and use artificial tears when needed
- ✓Teens should increase outdoor activity and check vision regularly
How screens "tire out" the eyes
Staring at a screen up close for long periods markedly reduces blinking, speeds up tear-film evaporation, and easily causes dry eyes and a foreign-body sensation; sustained tension in the ciliary muscle brings eye fatigue and soreness.
Most of this discomfort is functional and can be eased by adjusting eye-use habits. But long-term neglect and overuse can also worsen existing eye problems.
Simple, effective eye-care habits
Try the "20-20-20" rule: about every 20 minutes of screen use, look up at something about 6 meters (20 feet) away for about 20 seconds to relax your eyes. Consciously blinking more also eases dryness.
Keep a suitable viewing distance and screen brightness, and avoid using your eyes in overly dark or strongly reflective environments; keep indoor light soft and even. Rest when your eyes feel dry, and use artificial tears under a doctor's guidance if needed.
Don't skip regular exams
Children and teens are in a critical period of vision development, so it's even more important to limit screen time, increase outdoor activity and check vision regularly to detect and address myopia early.
If you have persistent blurry vision, marked eye pain or visual-field abnormalities, see an ophthalmologist promptly rather than simply chalking it up to "eye strain."
