Overview

A cataract is clouding of the eye's lens that impairs vision, affecting one or both eyes. Symptoms include blurred vision, faded colors, glare, halos around lights and poor night vision. Aging is the most common cause.

Treatment

Early cataracts can be observed; when vision is affected, the main effective treatment is surgery to remove the clouded lens and implant an intraocular lens.

Dietary advice

A balanced diet rich in vitamins C and E and lutein from fruit and vegetables; protect the eyes from sun exposure.
