Sick Sinus Syndrome

Overview

The sinoatrial (SA) node, located at the junction of the right atrium and superior vena cava, is the heart's natural pacemaker. In sick sinus syndrome, dysfunction of the SA node causes abnormal heart rhythms such as excessive slowing or alternating fast and slow rates.

Symptoms

• Palpitations
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Transient visual blackout
• Syncope

Treatment

Symptomatic bradycardia is best treated with a permanent pacemaker; when combined with tachyarrhythmias, antiarrhythmic drugs are used under pacemaker protection.

Dietary advice

Light, balanced diet, avoiding excessive caffeine, no smoking and limited alcohol, and a regular routine.
