Overview

Postpartum hemorrhage is a serious delivery complication involving blood loss exceeding a set threshold within 24 hours after fetal delivery. Main causes include uterine atony, placental factors, birth canal trauma, and coagulation disorders, and it is a major cause of maternal death.

Symptoms

• Heavy vaginal bleeding
• Dizziness
• Palpitations
• Pale complexion
• Falling blood pressure

Treatment

An obstetric emergency requiring rapid identification of the cause, with uterine massage, uterotonics, and fluid and blood transfusion to stop bleeding.

Dietary advice

During recovery, strengthen nutrition with iron-rich, quality-protein foods to correct anemia, and ensure adequate rest.
