Cholecystitis
GastroenterologyOverview
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, more than 90% of which results from gallstones obstructing the cystic duct. Symptoms include right upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and occasional fever.
Symptoms
- Right upper abdominal pain
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal distension
Treatment
Acute attacks require fasting, fluid replacement, antibiotics, and antispasmodic pain relief, and often coexist with gallstones. Cholecystectomy may be considered for recurrent or severe cases; seek prompt medical care.
Dietary advice
Follow a low-fat diet, avoid greasy, fried, and high-cholesterol foods, and eat regular meals without overeating. Consume plenty of vegetables, fruits, and fiber-rich foods.
