Patent Ductus Arteriosus

Overview

The ductus arteriosus is a fetal blood vessel that allows oxygenated blood to bypass the non-functional lungs. It normally closes shortly after birth; when it fails to close, the condition is called patent ductus arteriosus, causing abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery.

Symptoms

• Shortness of breath
• Excessive sweating
• Fatigue
• Recurrent respiratory infections
• Growth delay

Treatment

Premature infants may be given NSAIDs to promote closure, while persistent cases require transcatheter closure or surgical ligation.

Balanced nutrition to support development, small frequent meals, low-salt diet, and plenty of quality protein.
