Polyneuropathy is widespread damage to the peripheral nerves from various causes such as diabetes, toxins, and nutritional deficiency. It presents with symmetric sensory, motor, and autonomic dysfunction of the limbs, typically in a glove-and-stocking distribution.
Symptoms
- Numbness in the distal limbs
- Reduced sensation
- Muscle weakness
- Burning pain in hands and feet
- Reduced tendon reflexes
Treatment
Actively treat the underlying disease such as diabetes, supplement B vitamins, and use neurotrophic and analgesic drugs.
Dietary advice
Control blood glucose, supplement B vitamins, and eat more whole grains and leafy green vegetables.
