Overview

Multiple system atrophy is a sporadic neurodegenerative disorder of unknown cause, characterized by degeneration of neurons in multiple regions of the central nervous system. It presents with autonomic dysfunction, parkinsonism, and cerebellar ataxia, and progresses relatively quickly.

Symptoms

  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Bradykinesia
  • Ataxia
  • Dysarthria

Treatment

Treatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive, improving orthostatic hypotension and urinary dysfunction alongside rehabilitation exercises.

Dietary advice

Increase salt and fluid intake appropriately to improve low blood pressure, and eat easy-to-swallow foods to prevent choking.
