A lesion within the liver formed by a collection of pus. Common causes include abdominal infections such as appendicitis and diverticulitis, which can spread to the liver via the portal vein.
Symptoms
- Right upper abdominal pain
- Chills and high fever
- Percussion pain over the liver
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
Treatment
Treatment is mainly anti-infective therapy, with aspiration drainage or surgery for larger abscesses. Specialist evaluation is required.
Dietary advice
Eat a high-protein, high-calorie, easily digestible diet with adequate fluids, and strengthen nutritional support.
