Hyperlipidemia
CardiologyOverview
Hyperlipidemia is an abnormally elevated level of lipids or lipoproteins in the blood and the most common form of dyslipidemia. High LDL cholesterol in particular promotes atherosclerosis.
Symptoms
- Often asymptomatic
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Xanthomas
- Chest tightness
- Obesity
Treatment
Based on lifestyle changes (low-fat diet, exercise, weight control, no smoking or excess alcohol), with lipid-lowering drugs such as statins, fibrates or ezetimibe when needed. Monitor lipid levels regularly.
Dietary advice
Low-fat, low-cholesterol diet reducing organ meats, fatty meat and fried foods. Eat plenty of fiber-rich vegetables, whole grains and deep-sea fish.
