Cervicitis
Obstetrics & GynecologyOverview
Cervicitis is inflammation of the uterine cervix, most often caused by sexually transmitted infections, with common pathogens being Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. It may also result from cervical injury after surgical procedures allowing pathogens to enter, or from an allergic reaction to spermicides or latex condoms.
Symptoms
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Vulvar itching
- Lumbosacral soreness
- Postcoital bleeding
- Frequent urination
Treatment
Acute cases are treated mainly with anti-infective therapy, while chronic cervicitis may be managed with physical therapy as appropriate, with medication under medical guidance.
