Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

Overview

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is death of bone cells and marrow due to interrupted or impaired blood supply to the femoral head. It is often related to long-term steroid use, alcohol abuse, and trauma, causing hip pain and limited movement, with femoral head collapse in later stages.

Symptoms

• Hip pain
• Limping
• Limited movement
• Radiating thigh pain

Treatment

Early treatment focuses on reduced weight-bearing, medication, and physical therapy, while late stages often require artificial joint replacement.

Quit alcohol, maintain balanced nutrition, supplement calcium and protein appropriately, and control weight.
