Anaphylactic Shock

Overview

Anaphylactic shock is a severe, life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction that occurs rapidly after re-exposure to an allergen. It causes a sharp drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, and airway swelling, and requires emergency treatment.

Symptoms

• Sudden drop in blood pressure
• Difficulty breathing
• Skin hives (urticaria)
• Laryngeal edema
• Confusion

Treatment

Immediately remove the allergen and inject intramuscular epinephrine, maintain airway patency, give fluids for shock, and add corticosteroids and antihistamines.

Dietary advice

Clearly identify and strictly avoid the offending food, eat a light, easily digestible diet during recovery, and avoid highly allergenic foods.
