Osteomalacia

Endocrinology

Overview

Osteomalacia is impaired bone mineralization in adults, most often caused by vitamin D deficiency. It leads to soft, weakened bones with bone pain and muscle weakness (rickets is the equivalent condition in children).

Symptoms

  • Bone pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Bone deformity
  • Fatigue

Treatment

Supplement vitamin D and calcium to correct the deficiency, treat underlying causes such as kidney disease, and increase sun exposure with moderate weight-bearing exercise.

Dietary advice

Plenty of foods rich in vitamin D and calcium, adequate sun exposure, and a balanced diet.
