Myelodysplastic Syndrome

Hematology

Overview

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of heterogeneous clonal myeloid neoplasms originating from hematopoietic stem or progenitor cells. It is characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis and cytopenias, with a high risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Symptoms

  • Anemia
  • Bleeding tendency
  • Recurrent infections
  • Fatigue
  • Pallor

Treatment

Treatment centers on comprehensive management including supportive care and hypomethylating agents; some high-risk patients may be considered for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with individualized treatment after risk assessment in hematology.

Dietary advice

Strengthen nutrition with clean, easily digestible, high-protein, high-vitamin foods, and pay attention to dietary hygiene to prevent infection.
