Paronychia

Overview

An infection of the tissue surrounding the nail, including the lateral and proximal nail folds. Typical symptoms are redness, swelling, and pain, with pus formation in severe cases.

• Redness and swelling of the nail fold
• Pain
• Suppuration
• Local tenderness
• Nail deformity

Treatment

Early treatment involves local anti-inflammatory care, incision and drainage for suppuration, and nail removal surgery for recurrent cases. Specialist evaluation is required.

Maintain a balanced diet with adequate high-quality protein and vitamins, and keep the hands and feet clean.
