Colonic Diverticular Disease

Overview

Diverticulosis is the presence of multiple diverticula in the colon, pouches formed where the mucosa and submucosa herniate through weak points in the muscular wall. Most cause no symptoms, but inflammation of a diverticulum causes diverticulitis.

Symptoms

• Abdominal pain
• Abdominal bloating
• Constipation
• Blood in stool

Treatment

Asymptomatic cases need no specific treatment; treat diverticulitis with antibiotics, and use surgery for recurrent bleeding or perforation.

Dietary advice

Increase dietary fiber and fluids to keep bowel movements regular, and eat a low-residue diet during acute inflammation.
