Colorectal polyps are raised lesions arising from the mucosal surface of the colon or rectum. If left untreated, some polyps may progress to colorectal cancer, and incidence rises with age.

Symptoms

  • Blood in stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Mucous stool

Treatment

Most can be removed endoscopically, followed by regular surveillance colonoscopy to prevent recurrence and cancer.

Dietary advice

Eat more vegetables, fruits, and coarse fiber, reduce red meat and high-fat foods, and quit smoking and limit alcohol.
