Scabies

Overview

Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei burrowing into the epidermis. The most common symptoms are severe itching and a red, papular rash, sometimes with visible burrow tracks. It is typically spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, and itching often worsens at night.

Symptoms

• Severe nighttime itching
• Burrow-like lesions
• Papules and blisters
• Common in finger webs
• Household transmission

Treatment

Caused by scabies mites. Apply topical sulfur ointment or lindane cream, and boil-sterilize clothing and bedding.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, maintain personal hygiene, and avoid sharing clothing with others.
