Myopia
OphthalmologyOverview
Myopia (near-sightedness) is a refractive error in which, with accommodation relaxed, parallel light from beyond 5 meters focuses in front of the retina, so distant objects appear blurry while near objects are clear. It usually begins in childhood and progresses little after age 20. Besides blurred distance vision, it may cause eye strain and headache, and severe myopia increases the risk of retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma.
Symptoms
- Blurred distance vision
- Squinting
- Eye strain
- Dry eyes
- Headache
Treatment
Correction is mainly with suitable framed glasses or contact lenses; adults with stable prescriptions may consider laser surgery, while children and adolescents should mind eye hygiene and outdoor activity.
Dietary advice
Eat a balanced diet with plenty of foods rich in vitamin A and lutein to protect vision.
