Syringomyelia

Overview

Syringomyelia is a chronic, progressive disorder in which a fluid-filled cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord. It most often affects the cervical cord and can lead to loss of pain and temperature sensation, muscle atrophy, weakness, and stiffness.

Symptoms

• Segmental loss of pain and temperature sensation
• Hand muscle atrophy
• Limb weakness
• Dissociated sensory loss
• Unnoticed burns

Treatment

Mild cases are monitored, while cases with clear progression or associated deformity are treated with surgical decompression and drainage.

Dietary advice

Eat a high-protein, high-fiber diet, take care to prevent burns, and ensure balanced nutrition.
