Acute Cholecystitis

Overview

Acute inflammation of the gallbladder, in over 90% of cases caused by obstruction of the cystic duct by a gallstone. Symptoms include right upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and occasional fever.

Symptoms

• Severe right upper abdominal pain
• Fever
• Nausea and vomiting
• Positive Murphy's sign
• Radiation to the shoulder and back

Treatment

Mild cases are treated with fasting, anti-infective, and antispasmodic therapy, while recurrent or severe cases undergo cholecystectomy. Specialist evaluation is required.

Dietary advice

Fast during the acute phase, then take a low-fat, light liquid diet after relief, gradually progressing to a low-fat diet.
