Acute Peritonitis

Overview

An acute inflammation of the peritoneum, which may result from bacterial infection with or without an obvious source. It causes severe abdominal pain and peritoneal irritation and can lead to life-threatening complications.

Symptoms

• Severe abdominal pain
• Abdominal muscle rigidity
• Tenderness and rebound tenderness
• Fever
• Nausea and vomiting

Treatment

Treatment targets the underlying cause and usually involves fasting, anti-infective therapy, and surgical management of the lesion. Specialist evaluation is required.

Dietary advice

Fast during the acute phase, then progress from a liquid to an easily digestible diet during recovery, and strengthen nutritional support.
