Acute Mastitis

Overview

An acute inflammation of the breast, mainly caused by bacterial infection, most often occurring during breastfeeding.

Symptoms

• Red, swollen, hot, painful breast
• Fever
• Local lump
• Milk stasis
• Swollen axillary lymph nodes

Treatment

Early treatment involves emptying the breast and anti-infective therapy, with incision and drainage if an abscess forms. Specialist evaluation is required.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet with adequate fluids, reduce high-fat foods, and eat plenty of vegetables and fruit.
