Kaposi's Sarcoma

Overview

A tumor caused by human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. It became recognized in the 1980s as a complication of AIDS.

Symptoms

• Purplish-red skin plaques
• Nodules
• Lymphedema
• Mucosal lesions
• Local pain

Treatment

Treatment involves local therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy depending on the condition, along with treatment of the underlying disease. Specialist evaluation is required.

Dietary advice

Strengthen nutritional support with adequate high-quality protein, and eat a light, balanced diet to boost resistance.
