Oral Lichen Planus

Overview

Lichen planus is a chronic epithelial disease of the papulosquamous group, commonly affecting the skin, oral mucosa, and tongue. Oral lesions present as white lace-like patterns, erosions, itching, and white plaques, and diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy under the microscope. The exact cause is unclear but may be related to oxidative stress and certain drugs and diseases.

Symptoms

• White lace-like pattern on the mucosa
• Mucosal erosion
• Burning pain
• Pain aggravated by irritants

Treatment

Remove local irritants; apply topical or systemic corticosteroids for the erosive type, with attention to psychological adjustment and follow-up.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, warm, soft diet, avoid spicy, hot, and coarse foods, quit smoking and alcohol, and supplement with vitamins.
