Lupus Nephritis

Nephrology

Overview

Lupus nephritis is an immune-complex glomerulonephritis caused by systemic lupus erythematosus involving the kidneys. Deposition of immune complexes in the kidney causes inflammatory damage, mainly presenting with proteinuria, hematuria, and edema, and is one of the serious complications of lupus.

Symptoms

  • Proteinuria
  • Hematuria
  • Edema
  • Joint pain
  • Facial rash

Treatment

Corticosteroids combined with immunosuppressants are used to control the disease, with regular monitoring of kidney function and urinary protein.

Dietary advice

Low-salt, quality-protein diet, avoiding sun exposure that may trigger flares, and avoiding spicy irritant foods.
