Dacryocystitis

Overview

Dacryocystitis is inflammation of the lacrimal sac and surrounding tissue, usually caused by nasolacrimal duct obstruction leading to tear retention and secondary bacterial infection. It mainly presents as tearing, redness and swelling at the inner canthus, and pus discharge on pressure, in acute and chronic forms.

Symptoms

• Tearing
• Redness at inner canthus
• Pus on pressure
• Local pain
• Recurrent episodes

Treatment

Caused by nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Control infection with antibiotics in the acute phase; chronic cases need lacrimal irrigation or dacryocystorhinostomy.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid spicy irritants.
