Epidemic Meningococcal Meningitis

Overview

Meningococcal meningitis is an acute inflammation of the meninges caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It presents with high fever, headache, neck stiffness, and often a petechial rash, and is a medical emergency that can be life-threatening.

Symptoms

• High fever
• Headache
• Vomiting
• Skin petechiae

Treatment

Start adequate doses of susceptible antibiotics as early as possible, with aggressive supportive care and management of raised intracranial pressure and shock.

Dietary advice

Take a bland liquid diet in the acute phase and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.
