Stye (Hordeolum)

Overview

A stye (hordeolum) is an infection of a sebaceous gland at the edge of the eyelid, resulting in redness and swelling at the eyelid margin, affecting the outer or inner side of the eyelid. It is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Symptoms

• Eyelid redness and swelling
• Localized pain
• Nodule
• Tenderness
• Tearing

Treatment

In the early stage, apply local warm compresses and use antibiotic eye medications. Once an abscess forms, it should be incised and drained by a physician; never squeeze it yourself.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid spicy, greasy, and irritating foods.
