Folliculitis

Overview

Folliculitis is a suppurative or non-suppurative inflammation of one or more hair follicles, presenting as localized redness, swelling, pain, and discomfort, mostly caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection. It can occur anywhere with hair, especially the scalp, face, neck, back, and buttocks, and tends to recur.

Symptoms

• Follicular red papules
• Pustule at the tip
• Mild pain
• Scattered distribution
• Recurrent episodes

Treatment

Often caused by bacterial infection. Keep the skin clean, apply topical antibacterial agents, and take oral antibiotics in severe cases.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, limit greasy and sugary foods, drink plenty of water, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
