Splenic Rupture

Overview

An emergency in which the spleen's capsule and parenchyma rupture due to trauma or pathological factors, mostly caused by blunt abdominal injury. Because the spleen is highly vascular, rupture readily causes massive intra-abdominal bleeding and can rapidly lead to hemorrhagic shock.

Symptoms

• Left upper abdominal pain
• Peritoneal irritation signs
• Hemorrhagic shock
• Pallor
• Radiation to the left shoulder

Treatment

A surgical emergency; depending on severity, splenic repair or splenectomy with anti-shock therapy is performed. Specialist evaluation is required.

Dietary advice

Resume diet gradually after surgery, strengthen nutritional support with adequate high-quality protein, and keep it light and easily digestible.
