Bartholin's Cyst

Overview

A Bartholin's cyst is a cyst arising from the greater vestibular (Bartholin's) gland of the vulva. It forms when the gland's duct opening or duct becomes obstructed, preventing secretions from draining and causing them to accumulate. The most common cause is bacterial infection. Small cysts may be asymptomatic; larger ones cause a bearing-down sensation and discomfort during intercourse, with local pain if infected. Marsupialization is a common surgical treatment.

Symptoms

• Vulvar mass
• Local distending pain
• Foreign body sensation
• Discomfort when walking
• Redness and swelling

Treatment

Small asymptomatic cysts may be observed; larger or recurrently infected cysts can be treated with marsupialization, with antibiotics if infection is present.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland diet, avoid spicy and greasy foods, drink plenty of water, and keep the vulva clean.
