Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Hashimoto's thyroiditis, also called chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid is attacked by cell- and antibody-mediated immune processes. It may initially be asymptomatic with gradual painless goiter, and many patients eventually develop hypothyroidism.
Symptoms
- Goiter
- Fatigue
- Cold intolerance
- Constipation
- Weight gain
Treatment
Regular monitoring of thyroid function, levothyroxine replacement therapy when hypothyroidism develops, and consideration of surgery when marked goiter causes compression.
Dietary advice
Moderate iodine control, balanced diet, and adequate intake of quality protein and selenium-rich foods.
