Glaucoma
OphthalmologyOverview
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, causing visual field loss and vision loss. The most common type is open-angle glaucoma, followed by angle-closure glaucoma, and some patients have normal-tension glaucoma with normal eye pressure. Open-angle glaucoma progresses slowly and painlessly, typically starting from peripheral vision, and vision loss from glaucoma is permanent.
Symptoms
- Eye pain and pressure
- Decreased vision
- Narrowed visual field
- Headache
- Halos around lights
Treatment
The core goal is to lower eye pressure and protect the optic nerve, using pressure-lowering eye drops under medical guidance and laser or surgery when necessary, requiring long-term follow-up.
Dietary advice
Eat a balanced diet, avoid drinking large amounts of water at once, limit strong tea and coffee, and stay emotionally calm.
