Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy

Overview

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare, life-threatening complication that occurs mainly in the third trimester or shortly after delivery. It is thought to be linked to abnormal fetal mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism; prompt treatment and early delivery markedly improve the prognosis.

Symptoms

• Nausea and vomiting
• Upper abdominal pain
• Jaundice
• Fatigue

Treatment

Once confirmed, terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible and provide liver-protective, coagulation-correcting, and supportive care with intensive multidisciplinary monitoring.

Dietary advice

Follow a low-fat, high-carbohydrate, easily digestible diet to ensure adequate calories, and supplement nutrition per medical advice.
