Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid Gland

Overview

Also known as pleomorphic adenoma, this is the most common benign tumor of the parotid gland, named for its mixed epithelial and mesenchymal components. It usually presents as a painless, slow-growing mass below the earlobe with a tendency to recur and undergo malignant change.

Symptoms

• Painless preauricular mass
• Medium firmness
• Slow growth
• Movable
• Local elevation

Treatment

Mostly benign; treatment is mainly complete surgical resection to avoid recurrence. Specialist evaluation is required.
