Ptosis (Drooping Eyelid)
OphthalmologyOverview
Ptosis is drooping of the upper eyelid due to insufficient or absent function of the levator palpebrae superioris or Muller muscle, so the eyelid cannot lift fully and covers part or all of the pupil. It may be congenital or acquired.
Symptoms
- Drooping upper eyelid
- Difficulty opening eye
- Raised brow to see
- Head tilted back
Treatment
Identify the cause; congenital cases or those significantly affecting vision or appearance usually require surgical correction, while myasthenia gravis is treated with medication.
Dietary advice
