Hernia
General SurgeryOverview
A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue out of its normal anatomical position through a congenital or acquired weak point, defect, or opening. Most hernias occur in the abdomen, especially the groin. About 66% of inguinal hernia patients report symptoms of varying degrees, including pain or discomfort during coughing, exercise, or bowel movements.
Symptoms
- Groin lump
- Protrusion on standing
- Dragging sensation
- Reduction when lying down
- Local pain
Treatment
In adults, surgical repair is the main curative treatment, and tension-free hernia repair can be performed. Emergency medical attention is needed if incarceration or severe pain occurs and the hernia cannot be reduced.
Dietary advice
Maintain a balanced diet with plenty of high-fiber foods to prevent constipation, and avoid straining during bowel movements and increasing abdominal pressure.
