Trachoma

Overview

Trachoma is an infectious disease caused by infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. It causes roughening of the inner surface of the eyelids and may lead to eye pain, damage to the corneal surface, or blindness. Untreated, repeated infections can cause the eyelids to turn inward, leading to blindness.

Symptoms

• Itchy eyes
• Foreign body sensation
• Tearing
• Discharge
• Eye redness

Treatment

Treatment focuses on anti-chlamydial therapy, with antibiotic eye medications used under a physician's guidance. Maintain personal hygiene and avoid cross-infection; late-stage complications require surgery.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, take in plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and supplement vitamin A.
