Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia

Overview

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is severe pain in the distribution of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Like other neuralgias, it is difficult to treat because ordinary painkillers are largely ineffective.

Symptoms

• Paroxysmal severe throat pain
• Pain at the base of the tongue
• Triggered by swallowing
• Radiating deep ear pain
• Worsening with eating

Treatment

First-line pain control uses drugs such as carbamazepine; if drugs fail, microvascular decompression or nerve block may be used.

Dietary advice

Eat warm soft foods and avoid very cold, very hot, and irritating foods that trigger pain.
